Performances
I was able to bring the leader of the BIMBOTS, BIMBOTICA, to life through performance with a queer cabaret, called Karma Leon’s Kaberet. After seeing what the BIMBOTS could look like with Vil’s interpretation, I thought I could bring my own version to life by turning myself into the character and having the personality of BIMBOTICA. I developed two lip-sync performances to the songs ‘Femmebot’ by Charli XCX and ‘When I Rule the World’ by LIZ. These songs were very reflective of the BIMBOTS in their themes of robots and world domination. To develop the choreography I watched other lip-sync performances from drag queens, as well as the songs being performed live by the artists themselves. After coming up with my own choreography, I then considered how to best portray BIMBOTICA through the use of make-up and costume. The first song, ‘Femmebot’, had a more sexual vibe to it, so I took inspiration from the Austin Powers’ Fembot outfits and kept the theme pink and fluffy, wearing a wrap-around top with flowing sleeves and a mini skirt, with a pink maribou feathered trim on both. In order to convey BIMBOTICA as a sexy sex robot, I wore big fake breasts and also created panels on my face using make-up to look as if my face was made of metal sheets. For ‘When I Rule the World’ I wanted the outfit to look more technologically advanced. I wore holographic hot pants and a bralette with LED breasts inside, which changed colour during the performance.
